I used to be sporty….
I used to be great.
I used to be an athletic girl…
But that’s all changed.
It came into my body…
like I had just been drowned.
Pain and suffering….
my life turned around.
I was in pain…
and I thought I was going to die.
I was dying slowly….
drowning away.
I lay in my bed, all day…
not being able to speak or say.
Then….I tackled it,
and I slowly drowned it down….
There it lies
slowly dying flat on its back….
And I hope it doesn’t come back up.
Now I am strong….
but not as much as I was supposed to be.
I would have been the best….
although that still might be me.
But when I think about it…
I am a much bigger person now.
I have had M.E.
It sounds strange I know.
But inside… I won
It’s destiny.
M.E. tried to destroy me
with torture and pain
for me and my family.
But it has made me who I am today
And for that I am proud.
Sarah had M.E. for three years, from the age of 8-11. She had been the top Judo belt of her school, and had to give up all sports when she became ill.
She missed almost a year of school, and at the worst part of her illness was unable to walk and was confined to a wheelchair. Sarah recovered in the summer of 2002, and then took up Fencing. In 2003 she was selected to represent Great Britain in Under 15 Sabre Fencing at an international competition in France.
Sarah, who trains at one of the country's leading Fencing academies, is now fully recovered from M.E., and is aiming for further national and international Fencing competitions.
