Keep safe

Animated cartoon character

DON'T PANIC! You shouldn't get too stressed about abuse - honestly, it isn't that common. But it does happen -that's the bad news…the good news is that there are loads of things you can do to protect, not just yourself, but your mates too.

One of the easiest ways to protect yourself is to be a 'safe surfer'! Nobody wants you to stop using the internet - let's face it, it's great fun!

However, there are some risks. Some websites are unsuitable for young people they might pictures or information that is quite disturbing or frightening.

Internet chatrooms are another worry. Sometimes, paedophiles use these chatrooms to make friends with children. (Paedophiles are men and women who abuse children.) How do they manage to do it?  Well, they are quite sneaky really…they pretend to be children…they make sure they know about the latest CDs, fashion and celebrities so that they sound just like you. They will try to find out as much as possible about you and sometimes even ask to meet up with you.

You should NEVER meet up with people you have met in a chatroom. DON'T give anybody your address, phone number, mobile number or email address. If someone does seem to be asking you a lot of questions or trying to meet up…STOP talking with them straight away and tell someone you trust about your concerns.

If you need any more info about using the internet, go to safe surfing and remember…tell your friends how to keep safe too!
